June 2009: Risk guru dies
The death was announced on 5 June 2009 of one of the most influential people in shaping modern risk management, Peter L Bernstein. His seminal best-seller "Against the gods: The remarkable story of risk" was published in 1996 when Peter Bernstein was aged 77, at an age when most people would be well into their retirement. This book explained much of the history behind the development of risk management into a major discipline, written in way that ordinary people could understand. Despite this success, Peter Bernstein still never retired, and at the time of his death aged 90 he was working on another book on risk. Click here to view a short video recorded by Peter Bernstein in January 2008.
February 2009: New risk guides published
Two new risk guides are available from the UK Association for Project Management (APM), co-edited by David Hillson. Interfacing Risk and Earned Value Management presents practical guidance on taking advantage of the synergies between risk management and EVM. Prioritising Project Risks discusses the limitations in typical approaches and offers fourteen prioritisation techniques in addition to the Probability-Impact Matrix. Both guides are available as free downloads for APM members.

January 2007: For he’s a jolly good Fellow
David Hillson has been elected as a Fellow of two prestigious professional bodies, reflecting his broad interest in topics beyond his own speciality of risk management.

  • The Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce (RSA, www.theRSA.org) was founded in 1754 as a force for change in the world, with the mission “To embolden enterprise, enlarge science, refine art, improve our manufactures and extend our commerce.” David joins a group of 25,000 leading professionals who have demonstrated sustained achievement, with proven intellectual and creative ability. We aim to channel the rising concern about global poverty in fresh directions that will deliver tangible improvement and genuine opportunities for people in poverty. We pay particular attention to the role of spiritual capital (relationships, vision, motivation, values, emotional and spiritual intelligence) as a fundamental dimension of both successful business enterprise and economic development. Full details of the Transforming Business vision can be found at www.transformingbusiness.net or from the project coordinator Dr Peter Heslam .
